About this collection

The Historic Clothing Collection (1790-1990) is a project of the Textiles, Merchandising and Design (TXMD) program at Middle Tennessee State University. The program is part of the Department of Human Sciences and this collection is intended for TXMD faculty, students and the general public. This collection was digitzed and funded, in part, by the Department of Human Sciences and the Digital Seed Grant, a program of Digital Scholarship Initaitives at Walker Library.

Purpose: Web-based historic clothing collections are not abundant for various reasons. The MTSU collection is now available worldwide to students, professionals, museums, and consumers with an interest in historic apparel and accessories. Developing a digital inventory of the collection and making it available via the web will further the goals of the TXMD program, MTSU and the study of historic clothing and accessories. A brief summary of the collection is available for download: Introducing the Historic Clothing Collection.

Explore: The physical collection has over 750+ items maintained in its climate controlled laboratory. The online collection has nearly 400 of those items. Explore this collection via the suggested topics below or by circa date, title, type, or textile content (which are located along the lefthand navigation) on this Browse All page.

Helpful Tip: To view the front and back side of a garmet at the same time, click on the "Side-by-Side View" button directly above the image.
